Love Jones History

Love Jones is:
Christopher Hawpe - Guitar, Vocals; Jonathan Palmer - Vocals; Barry Thomas - Bass Guitar; Stuart Johnson - Drums. (Ben Daughtry - Vocals, Congas left the band in December 1995.)

Formed in Louisville Kentucky in January 1990, Love Jones quickly became the most popular non cover band in the region. Two self produced tapes ("Flavour of Love" and "Social Dance") became big sellers in the region.

In June 1992 the band moved to Los Angeles and soon afterword a third self produced release ("Live at Jerry's") fell into the hands of Zoo Entertainment Art Director K.Lee Hammond and Minty Fresh Records President Jim Powers. This resulted in " I Like Young Girls/ Little Black Book", an Earle Mankey produced 7" single released in May 1993 on Minty Fresh Records, just 11 months after Love Jones relocated to Los Angeles.

Lee Hammond had hoped the single would convince Zoo Entertainment to sign Love Jones and immediately after the infamous show opening for Tool at the Church of Scientology, Love Jones was offered a contract in the parking lot by Zoo President Lou Maglia. That was May 1, 1993.

The first Love Jones album "Here's to the Losers" was recorded in July 1993 and released on October 26th of the same year. The band then headed out on a 6 week, cross country tour with the Afghan Whigs.

Love Jones appeared on The Conan O'Brien Show on January 7, 1994, and completed a self directed video on February 26th of that same year.

While looking for another opening slot, the band undertook their first major headlining tour of the Pacific Northwest in the spring of 1994, which proved to be successful at building a strong base in San Francisco, Portland, Seattle and Reno.

By not having a major agency to secure a solid tour in support of another artist, Love Jones and Electric Artists Agency booked a two month tour of the U.S. in August and September 1994.

During the summer of 1994 Love Jones received very strong press interest. This included feature articles in USA Today, Newsweek, Entertainment Weekly, Billboard, Seventeen, Daily Variety, Access, Creem, Request, New York Times, Los Angeles Times Calendar, Ect. helping to generate a 3 1/2 minute feature story on Entertainment Tonight and a feature segment on MTV News.

In January/ February 1995 Love Jones recorded their second album "Powerful Pain Relief" with Paul duGre Co-Producing. It was released September 12, 1995 and the band embarked on a national promo tour culminating with a live album being recorded on September 28, 1995 at the El Rey Theatre in L.A.  (That is the night that Ben had his tooth knocked out.)

The Live album, "Love Jones - Live in Hollywood" was released on December 10, 1995 as a vinyl only release by "Rock the House" Records a division of Classic Records. It is available by mail order only.

The band cancelled a national tour on October 1995 because of complications to Bens Tooth. Ben eventually resigned from the band in December 1995 for personal reasons.

Love Jones toured with the Presidents of the United States in March 1996 throught the Southwest. During this tour the band was approached by David Schwimmer about possibly appearing in a film he was directing. We accepted.

It wasn't the first film project for the band but easily the most noteworthy. Love Jones would appear as "Luv Jonz" and be featured in the entire second half of the movie. "Love Jones as Luv Jonz" would appear in the opening credits and the band members were all given lines in the movie.

That gets us up to date. We are currently writing and planning the next record.

Love Jones has appeared in the feature films:

"FRENCH EXIT" - Starring Jonathan Silverman and Madchen Amick which has unfortunately never been released. It was filmed in the Spring of 1995. It was made by Ceneville Films.

"DOGWATER" (working title) - Starring Teri Hatcher, Lara Flynn Boyle and David Schwimmer. It is also the Directorial debut for Mr. Schwimmer. Filmed in Chicago in June and July 1996, it is scheduled to be released in April 1997 with a possible showing at Sundance in Feb. 1997. It was Produced by Richard Gladstein (Resevior Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Crossing Guard) for Miramax.

Love Jones has songs appearing the films:

SWINGERS - "Paid for Loving" from Here's to the Losers. The film will be released October 15th nationally by Miramax and a soundtrack album should follow. (Barry worked on this film from the beginning and is credited with being the Music Consultant). It's a film about a group of friends (all guys) who hit the clubs around L.A. in search of women and happiness. It features some of the trendy clubs and features the Swing Music Scene happening in L.A.

A soundtrack will come out about the same time the movie is released in the spring of 1997. Love Jones covers the songs "Love is a Battlefield", "Come on Eileen", "Hungry Like the Wolf/Save a Prayer/ Rio" (Duran Duran medley), "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?", and "Don't You Forget About Me".
